Missouri occupies an area of about 69,709 square miles, and the geologic conditions across the state vary greatly. There are more than a dozen major aquifers underlying various parts of the state. In some areas, three or more aquifers are present. In other areas where groundwater resources are poor, there may only be one aquifer or none at all.University of the Ozarks has consistently provided creative, student-oriented innovation in higher education.Geologically, the area is a broad dome with the exposed core in the ancient St. Francois Mountains. The Ozarks cover nearly 47,000 square miles (120,000 km 2 ), making it the most extensive highland region between the Appalachians and Rockies. Together with the Ouachita Mountains, the area is known as the U.S. Interior Highlands . The main source of groundwater in the Salem Province is the Ozark Aquifer, which sometimes divided into the Upper and Lower Ozark aquifers. The Ozark Aquifer is composed of many geologic formations and is normally 800 to 1,000 feet thick, though it can reach 3,000 feet thick at the Arkansas border.
